Boomerang Bags is a community driven initiative tackling plastic pollution at the grassroots level.

Emily Davies told us how Boomerang Bags works to reduce the use of plastic bags by engaging local communities in the making of Boomerang Bags – community made using recycled materials, Boomerang Bags provide a free, fun, sustainable alternative to plastic bags.

Commenced in Burleigh Heads by co-founders, Tania Potts and Jordyn de Boer, Boomerang Bags neighbourhoods have grown steadily to number 203.  In May 2016 reach Caloundra 4551 when Lynne Baker established the local 4551 group.

400 bags later the group is going strong – even if you cannot sew, they will find a job for you or material or dollars can be donated.

Emily kindly made sure that every member present went home with a bag to use and advertise the 4551 group.  Some members were seen haggling to get a design better suited to their gender!

So one community, needle and thread at a time, start conversations, make friends, up-cycle materials and work towards shifting society’s throw away mentality to a more sustainable revolution of re-use.
