Guest Speaker

Council operates many waste management facilities across the Sunshine Coast that include resource recovery centres and recycling markets.

Council recovers goods and resources from the waste materials that are delivered to these centres.  This includes goods that can be sold for re-use, and construction materials such as steel and concrete that can be re-processed and recycled.  It also includes all other common recyclables that are collected in the yellow top bins (such as cardboard, paper, cans, etc.).

Sandie Johnson is the key spokesperson for the Sunshine Coast Council's recycling & waste management program and today she took us through her garbage!

Her presentation was enthralling and we learnt much about removing tops, glass bottles and jars without tops but not drinking glasses (because of the much higher temperature required), no takeaway coffee cups, rinse items if possible.  We also heard how the depot employs a plastic bag man - all day every day he picks the bags out of the garbage presented for recycling!

Technology is has developed and will continue to develop and that is why many of these rules are recommended.

A fascinating presentation on an everyday subject!
