Past District Governor, Alan Still OAM was presented with a Royce Abbey Award at a ceremony held at the Rotary Club of Caloundra's meeting held on Tuesday morning 31 October 2017.
The Royce Abbey Award is named in honour of Royce Abbey the Essendon Rotarian who served as President of Rotary International in 1988-89.
 
The Award was presented by the President of the Club, Peter Davis in the presence of Alan's wife, Win and son, Tony who is President of the Rotary Club of Geelong Central and his fellow Rotarians.  Alan was Governor of Rotary District 9640 in 1989-90, the year after Royce Abbey was International President.
 
To date:
  • more than 300 Rotarians have received Royce Abbey Awards
  • More than 30 different Rotary Clubs in eight Districts have bestowed Awards
  • The Award has helped finance more than twenty Royce and Jean Abbey Vocational Scholarships
 

About Alan Still & Rotary

Alan became a Rotarian in 1970 when he joined the Rotary Club of Darwin.
 
Subsequently he moved to the Rotary clubs of Rockhampton, Burleigh Heads (1 February 1983), and Caloundra from 7 July 2015.  He remains an Honorary member of the Rotary Club of Burleigh Heads.
 
He was President of the Rotary Club of Burleigh Heads on two occasions, 1985-86 and 1997-98.
 
Alan became Governor of Rotary District 9640 for the 1989-90 Rotary year.
 
History was made on 9 May 1990 when DG Alan Still chartered the Rotary Club of Ashmore as the first club in District 9640 to admit women members.  It was chartered with 28 members and today maintains a membership of around 46.

The Royce and Jean Abbey Endowed Fund and the Vocational Scholarship

In recognition of Royce’s year as World President, the District Governors of 1988-89 established the Royce & Jean Endowed Fund with the permission of The Rotary Foundation.  Royce and his wife Jean Abbey decided that income from the Endowed Fund would be used to finance agricultural and related scholarships which would assist the less-developed countries in the Asia-Pacific region.  The selected candidate would spend three months in Australia undertaking practical training in his or her field assisted by scholarship funding of USD$10,000.
 

The Royce Abbey Award

The purpose of the Royce Abbey Award is to encourage members who have shown enthusiasm and commitment to Rotary to use their talents to further the object of Rotary at Club, District and International level.
 
The Rotarian would be recognised as an enthusiastic and willing participant in club activities.
 
More than 300 Royce Abbey Awards have been bestowed on Rotarians both domestically and internationally.
 
While recognising deserving Rotarians, the Royce Abbey Award also carries with it a contribution of AUD $1,000 to the Rotary Foundation in support of the Royce and Jean Abbey Vocational Scholarship.
