Next Tuesday's Meeting

The Queensland Air Museum is a not-for-profit community owned aviation museum located at Caloundra Airport.  Its mission is to collect and preserve all aspects of aviation heritage with an emphasis on Australia and Queensland.  The museum has the largest collection of historical aircraft in Queensland and it also has a large collection of aircraft engines, equipment, artifacts, photographs and books.

Geoff Smith is the Marketing and Promotions Manager of the Queensland Air Museum and has been for the last four years.  He is retired, living in Pelican Waters/Golden Beach for the past 18 years after a career in finance.  He has previously been involved with both Rotary and Lions.  Geoff is married to Patsy and has two children and three grandchildren.  His interests are travel, badminton and, of course, QAM.

Geoff will be presenting to us at the Oaks Resort on Tuesday morning, 20 March.

Care Garden Project

Ian Belcher brought his skills to chairing our meeting and promptly introduced Julianna to spruik her fundraising efforts.  You can help here.  Julianna also updated us on her daughter, Jessica's experience so far as a Rotary Youth Exchange student in France.  It seems that the first nine weeks might have been a trial but the trip around Europe will no doubt make up for that.
Vicky Meyer - the Business Engagement Leader with Integrated Family & Youth Services( IFYS) was our Guest Speaker.  Chris Rees - who, with Rachael, has been representing the club on the project committee - ably introduced Vicky.  She presented on the joint project to develop and build a therapeutic environment in the form of a garden and play area for young people living in the care of IFYS Foster Care.  More here

Avid Golfer

A young man, who was also an avid golfer, found himself with a few hours to spare one afternoon.  He figured if he hurried and played very fast, he could get in 9 holes before he had to head home.

Just as he was about to tee off, an old gentleman shuffled onto the tee and asked if he could accompany the young man as he was golfing alone.  Not being able to say no, he allowed the old man to join him.

To his surprise, the old man played fairly quickly.  He didn't hit the ball far, but plodded along consistently and didn't waste much time. Finally, they reached the 9th fairway and the young man found himself with a tough shot.  There was a large pine tree right in front of his ball and directly between his ball and the green.  After several minutes of debating how to hit the shot, the old man finally said, "You know, when I was your age, I'd hit the ball right over that tree."

With that challenge placed before him, the youngster swung hard, hit the ball up, right smack into the top of the tree trunk and it thudded back on the ground not a foot from where it had originally lay.

The old man offered one more comment, "Of course, when I was your age, that pine tree was only 3 feet tall."
