Next Tuesday there is a national holiday in Melbourne that is at least partly adopted throughout Australia. The Rotary Club of Caloundra is no exception despite the fact that at our normal meeting time there is not much else happening except track work!
However, many of our members are attending the Melbourne Cup lunch sponsored by us and they will be making up a magnificent 200 people crowd at that event. So to allow them time to put on their makeup and hats, our meeting has been 'transferred' to the Pelican Waters Tavern.
The following Tuesday, 14 November we will return to the Oaks Oasis Resort for a ShelterBox update from Brian Springer.
I thought I'd do a quick report on our breakfast meeting and spend some time talking about our achievements for October.
Our breakfast meeting on Tuesday, well attended with the shipment of "cruisers" back in town, turned out to be a milestone for our Club. More on that a little later.
Several guests mingled among our Group:
Honorary Member Pauline Hanley (visiting us from her new hometown of Melbourne and the Rotary Club of North Melbourne; so nice to see you again, Pauline).
Les Ponton from our daughter Club, the Rotary Club of Caloundra Pacific decided to do a makeup with our club; welcome Les.
Chris Rees, our guest yet again, now living on the coast after escaping the UK; welcome again, Chris.
The lovely Win Still, wife of Alan, who also brought along his son, Tony, who happens to also be a Rotarian, the President of the Geelong Central Club; welcome to all the 'Stills'.
Roger did a great job at the door, grabbing the money from everyone and Judy worked her magic with the Chair, both as last minute stand ins. It's a good job our Club has flexible members.
We were warned by Tony, his father's International Toast had failed the google test, but who bothers to check. It sounds so impressive, it must be true. Alan took us to Rotary District 2201 Spain and in particular the Rotary Club of Madrid.
We enjoyed listening to Bernie's 3 Minute Story about her life, culminating in what a selfless person she is. Always working tirelessly in the community. We know she will be a great President of our Club as she assumes that role in our next Rotary year. See Bernie's story later in this edition of The Reel here.
Our Guest Speaker, Andrew Elvin is the CEO of Coast2Bay Housing Group, an organisation specialising in community housing. He is also the Principal and Managing Director of Purpose Real Estate, the Sunshine Coast’s first not-for-profit real estate organisation with surpluses channelled back to the charitable enterprises of Coast2Bay. Such enterprises include building accommodation for women and children escaping domestic violence.
I don't think I will be called upon to perform a more auspicious task in my role as President: As a surprise to all members, the reason Tony Still was present was to allow me to present his father, Alan, with a Royce Abbey Award. This Award is one of the highest accolades to receive as a Rotarian. It came as a complete surprise to Alan, as humble as he is, but surely the person most deserving of such an honour.
Past District Governor, Alan Still OAM was presented with a Royce Abbey Award at a ceremony held at the Rotary Club of Caloundra's meeting held on Tuesday morning 31 October 2017.
The Royce Abbey Award is named in honour of Royce Abbey the Essendon Rotarian who served as President of Rotary International in 1988-89.
The Award was presented by the President of the Club, Peter Davis in the presence of Alan's wife, Win and son, Tony who is President of the Rotary Club of Geelong Central and his fellow Rotarians. Alan was Governor of Rotary District 9640 in 1989-90, the year after Royce Abbey was International President.
To date:
more than 300 Rotarians have received Royce Abbey Awards
More than 30 different Rotary Clubs in eight Districts have bestowed Awards
The Award has helped finance more than twenty Royce and Jean Abbey Vocational Scholarships
One of the joys of attending our weekly meetings has been to hear members' personal stories and how/why they joined Rotary.
Bernadette, or as we like to call her, Bernie was certainly no exception last Tuesday. She has a family of six children and 14 grandchildren. You'll have to read on to learn more about her family.
Her time with Rotary goes way back to Toowoomba South & Mareeba. She has been part of the Rotary Club of Caloundra family since June 2004 and most recently and formally as one of our Rotarians, having been inducted as a member in February 2014.
Bernie is our President Elect and looking forward to assuming her official role as President for 2018-19 on 1 July next.
(PS for our members - we are seeking a nomination for President 2019-20 and would like you to express interest in this important role; a volunteer is always a good choice)
While Mental Health Month may be over, Australian Rotary Health's Lift the Lid on Mental Illness campaign will run all year, which includes our "Adopt a Scientist" initiative.
Sunshine Coast Rotary Clubs (from Caloundra, Caloundra Pacific, Glasshouse Mountains, and Kawana Waters) presented the final RYDA Road Safety Education course for the year on Wednesday, 11 October to students from Sienna Catholic College using the Caloundra Turf Club facilities at Corbould Park Racecourse. These 16-18 year old students are approaching that crucial time in their lives where they start to drive independently or are travelling as passengers of novice drivers.
Our Neville Woodforth is the RYDA coordinator for Rotary District 9600. At our recent weekly meeting, he noted that 8,100 Sunshine Coast High School students from 12 schools attended the RYDA road safety education course in 2017. The RYDA program is supplied by Road Safety Education and delivered by Rotary Clubs throughout Australia & New Zealand. In Rotary District 9600, there are five fully-funded venues and two others.
Following our usual breakfast meeting on Tuesday 31 October and/or Tuesday 14 November, you are invited to stay for a ClubRunner refresher or to learn your way around our website and its member area.
You may bring your laptop or other device with a connection to the internet to better follow along.
Please bring your questions so they can be addressed. The session will be inter-active.

Darry Laing represented the club at the Caloundra Christian College Awards Night Presentation to present a bursary on behalf of the Rotary Club of Caloundra.
A reminder that our meeting on Tuesday 14 November will consider a change in the Locality for this club to accord with the more modern version embraced by Rotary International Policy.
No. The reason is because we need to make sure all our aid is uniform and the same for - approved and cleared by customs. We are required to provide a certificate of origin for customs – where is it from, what fibres included, and are they the right ones.
We also ensure that all our aid is exactly the same for equity issues for families receiving the aid. The difference between a heavy blanket and a lightweight blanket could potentially cause unrest, violence and rioting in the communities we provide aid to so to avoid this, we ask our generous donors to donate money so that we can buy the same aid for all our families to receive.
Question
How are ShelterBox aid items selected?
Answer
Our monitoring and evaluation team look at what we have delivered, where it can be improved, what families want. We then go out to our suppliers to see if they can provide this cost effectively, in the numbers and in the speed needed. We also have our horizons team look at what aid will be needed in the future.

Rotarians Against Malaria (RAM - A volunteer-run organisation working to eliminate malaria) is excited by the prospect of achieving malaria elimination in Timor Leste in the next five years.
The incidence of local transmission is very low now but there is still the risk of cross border infections and the Global Fund (to fight AIDS, TB & malaria) is significantly reducing their funding at this crucial time, ironically because the disease is so well controlled.
