Retired Air Force Pilot

Jun 11, 2024

I was born in Griffith NSW and spent my early years there. I had wanted to fly aeroplanes ever since I knew what they were. My family moved to Melbourne when I was ten so I spent my teens there. I started learning to fly at seventeen  on Tiger Moths. At that time an hour’s flying cost three quarters of my weeks pay. I finally achieved a Commercial Pilots Licence and an Instructors Rating but couldn’t get a job. I was married and the Air Force wouldn’t take a married trainee. However I found that tha Navy would and was lucky enough to get selected for Fleet Air Arm aircrew training in 1958. Training was with the Air Force so I was the only married trainee.

After graduation I went to the Naval Air Station at Nowra where I learned to Fly a Fairey Gannet, chase submarines, fire the weapons the Gannet carried, and land on a ship. I spent three and a half years flying the Gannet and then was transferred onto helicopters flying the Westland Wessex for a further time before leaving the Navy at the end of my short service commission.

I then joined Qantas where I flew Boeing 707’s and 747’s until 1990. I retired from Qantas and flew 747’s for Singapore airlines for five years.

After retiring from Singair we lived in England for three years then returned to Australia where I joined the Historical Aircraft Restoration Society and flew several of their aircraft.

We then moved to the Sunshine coast where I’m an active member of the Queensland Air Museum and fly regularly with a flying school.

His tips on how to sell to your advantage.

His tips on how to manage the real estate agent. Let them know you are the boss.

This not a presentation on where to buy etc. This suburb or that town for example.

Simply the methodology on how to achieve the best outcome for you.

Note Trevor is a private investor and has no connections to any real estate agency.

IFYS Marketing

Aug 06, 2024

Paul is Marketing and Communications Director for IFYS. IFYS delivers a range of specialist support and intervention programs for children, young people and families. Working closely with businesses, corporations, governments and other charities, IFYS offers accommodation, child protection, family support and youth transition services to communities.

IFYS provides a number of services across the state of Queensland including Crisis Accommodation Programs, Crisis Shelters, as well as Housing Pathway Programs. IFYS has a strong footprint in the work of Child Protection, Foster Care, Youth Development, Child Sexual Exploitation, Domestic and Family Violence, Disability and Community Food Programs.

Paul has spent almost 40 years working with marginalised people as a Counsellor, Educator, Community Development Worker, Service Manager, Area Manager and CEO. He has also worked in both the private and public sector as a Marketing Manager for Macquarie Communications (RGB Capital) and the Queensland Department of Families.

From 2014 to 2022, Paul held the role as Unit Manager with Push Productions (a Business Unit of IFYS). Push Productions was established in the mid 1990s by the service as a not for dividend communications, resource development and print unit. Whilst running this commercial print shop Paul was also able to introduce a workforce mentoring strategy for young people in foster care to support their development into the paid workforce.

Since 2022, Paul has headed up the Marketing and Communications division for IFYS, along with the role as General Manager for Inclusive Kids. Inclusive Kids is the fundraising arm of IFYS and plays an important role in supporting children who lack the necessary financial resources to participate in community life. Their mission is to ensure that children and young people can actively participate, feel a sense of belonging, and be included in their respective communities.

Over the course of his career Paul has understood the power of food as medicine and has worked in a number of programs that have focused on eliminating hunger and malnutrition as these create a self-sustaining barrier that keeps people stuck in poverty. Hunger makes it more difficult for a person to learn, work, pursue opportunities and contribute to society. It drains a person’s energy, destroys mental alertness and exacts a heavy price on health throughout his or her life.

Geocaching

Aug 20, 2024

n 1990 -1995 I had a very successful Electrical / Handyman business. I closed that down and travelled the world for 5 years, backpacking around and based myself in WinterPark Colorado, in the beautiful Rocky Mountains. During this time I took up scuba diving and after five plus years I thought it was time to head back home.
In 2001 I returned home and started a Scuba Diving business. It was very successful but with the addition of a wife and then a child the family commitments saw me move further into an educational role. My educational experience and my trade got me a job as an electrical teacher at TAFE in brisbane. I did this for 12 years and have just recently left TAFE and am now enjoying the hassle free life of semi retirement.
During the last 5 years I have found a great activity that gets me out and exercising. It was something that I tried to get my girls into and they enjoyed it while they were young but grew out of it as they got older. However I have continued on and have over 17,000 finds to my name. Geocaching takes you to places you would not normally go to, you will meet all kinds of wonderful people, here in Australia and overseas. While it is a free game to play it does like any sport require an input, that input is totally up to you.
In 2025 geocaching will be celebrating 25 years and it is a big party time. My goal is to run an event and share with the cachers of Australia what a great area we have as is the sunshine coast region. We have caches from mountain walks to paddles in rivers, beach walks and tree climbs. We have events of just a quick chat, a dinner catch up and even clean up days. There is something for everyone and the caches are placed all over the world, which is just another reason to travel.

Destiny Rescue

Nov 12, 2024

Nerilee Sowter has dedicated the past three decades to the noble cause of international not-for-profits, where she has tirelessly worked to transform the lives of those trapped in poverty and slavery.
Her journey to helping children get out of the sex trade began in 2011 when she felt a powerful calling to be an advocate for children sold into the sex trade. After numerous eye-opening trips to some of the world's most vulnerable regions, she recognized the urgent need to be a voice for these enslaved children.

In 2014, Nerilee embarked on her journey with Destiny Rescue Australia as the Team Trip Manager, leading numerous teams on missions to Cambodia and Thailand, raising awareness about the harrowing issues of human trafficking and sexual exploitation. Her commitment and passion shone through, leading to her appointment as Partnerships Manager, where she currently serves as an integral part of the fundraising and donor care team.
