The Salvation Army

Welcome to the first week in March, and what a wet one it's been.

This week saw us out and about again.  Our Vocational Visit took us to the Salvation Army Headquarters in Caloundra.  Salvo Volunteers cooked up a hearty BBQ breakfast and we were entertained by Major Phil, the man in charge in Caloundra.  He gave a very informative talk about what role the Salvos play in helping those less fortunate than ourselves in the community.

Phil commented about the difficulty some of their clients have to go through to arrive at the Centre.  Serious lack of public transport in this area of Caloundra does jeopardise the care the Salvos are able to provide.  For those of you who missed the visit or would just like to know more about it, here is the link.  Also, if you'd like to know more about the Salvo's and the wonderful services they provide, don't hesitate to contact James, our Community Services Director.  James is a 'retired' Commissioner of the Salvos, is a wealth of knowledge and is always willing to help.

Alan Still's International Toast also had a Salvation Army flavour to it.  We recognised the 150th Birthday of the Salvo's in Indonesia, West Java in Rotary District 3410

The Rotary International President for 2017-18 is Ian Risely, who happens to be an Australian.  Ian is visiting our District very soon.  It'd be fantastic to be part of the audience at the Dinner hosting Ian.  There is a Gala Dinner as well as a Tri-District Dinner - follow the links or see later in this edition of The Reel.

Our Annual St Patrick's Day Charity Golf Day is getting very close now, only one week away in fact.  Please get involved as much as you can.  Whether it be sponsoring a hole, organising and playing in a team, providing Raffle Prizes and generally helping out on the day.  The Golf Day was a huge success last year and I know the Committee has been working very hard for a long time to see that this year is even better. A reminder that our District Conference is scheduled for 20-22 April, at the Maroochy RSL.  This is a great chance to network and meet new Rotary friends and learn more about Rotary.  By now you would all have received an invitation via email, which you can use to register online.   We have decided to cancel our regular Breakfast Meeting on Tuesday 24 April (following on from the Conference) and instead, substitute it with members attending the Conference Dinner on the Saturday night (21 April).  Please click on the link for more information about our Conference.

Next week we are back at the Oaks again for breakfast.  Our Guest Speaker will be Vicky Meyer from Integrated Family and Youth Services (IFYS).  Vicky will be telling us about our club's involvement in the Rotary Clubs of Sunshine Coast South's project to enhance the lives of some of our families on the coast affected by domestic violence.  Please click on the link for more information.

Enjoy the wet weather and I look forward to seeing you on Tuesday.

Care Garden Project

The Rotary Clubs of Sunshine Coast South - in partnership with IFYS Foster Care - are developing and building a therapeutic environment in the form of a garden and play area for young people living in their care.  See the Design Concept below.

Vicky Meyer of Integrated Family & Youth Services(IFYS) will be telling us more about the project at our meeting next Tuesday.

District Conference

We are hoping that club members can attend the District Conference 'en masse' and stay for the Saturday Night Dinner.  Our meeting on the following Tuesday has been transferred to the Saturday Night so that's another incentive to attend - apart from great speakers and the entertainment line-up.
