Are You Up for the Challenge? Help Eradicate Polio
A world without polio is within our reach.  Today we're on the brink of eradicating a human disease for only the second time in history.

Polio eradication is one of Rotary’s longest standing and most significant efforts.

There are fewer polio cases today than ever before, but we will not stop until we reach zero and we need you help to finish the job.  Your donation can make a difference by helping us to:

Immunise 400 million children against polio every year
Improve surveillance systems to diagnose new cases and detect the  poliovirus in the environment
Hire more than 150,000 health workers to find and vaccinate every child

If polio is not eradicated, hundreds of thousands of children could be paralysed.  Global health care costs would rise dramatically, and many children’s quality of life would be drastically diminished.

Your donation today will save lives and give a child a chance at a prosperous future.

Peace was the go at Conference
Over 300 delegates attended the 2018 Rotary District 9600 Conference in Maroochydore last weekend.  There should have been more and those that weren't there missed some amazing, inspirational stories as well a the Flower Power Love-in on Saturday Night.
Like its bigger cousin, the International Convention (being held in Toronto, Canada in June), the purpose of the District Conference is to provide opportunities for networking, inspirational addresses, and discussions on Rotary-related matters.  The event recognises the service programs, projects, and public relations achievements in our District in order to inspire Rotarians to become more involved in service.

The conference also gives Rotarians and clubs a vision of Rotary beyond the club level and provides a memorable fellowship experience.

Many Rotarians have said that they were never truly enthusiastic about Rotary until they saw an inspirational presentation at a District Conference.

Back to our roots
Rotary members were challenged by President Ian Riseley to plant 1.2 million trees - one for every member - by Earth Day.

Clubs around the world have embraced that challenge, and in his travels this year, Riseley himself has often been asked to pick up a shovel.

Rotary District 9600 has planned a mass planting representing the number of Rotarians in the District.

The Rotary Club of Caloundra will be planting trees next Rotary year, partnering with Council, at a designated site along Sugar Bag Road.  More details soon.

World Immunisation Week 24-30 April
World Immunisation Week, 24-30 April, is a great opportunity to help spread the word that 'Vaccines Work' and are critical to preventing and ending diseases, like polio.

Did you know that through immunisation Rotary and its partners have helped protect more than 2.5 billion children worldwide from polio?  In addition, the “plus” in PolioPlus helps support a range of additional health and humanitarian interventions for other disease initiatives, such as measles and tuberculosis.

A little late ...
It's a great photo - we think from the 2018 ROMAC Trivia Night - even if it's rather late!

President Peter's Musings
Lest we forget, Anzac Day, a special and significant day remembered every year fell today.  I hope those who participated in Remembrance Services and those not able to, were able to pay their respects to representatives of our country, who paid the ultimate sacrifice, so we may live in a peaceful world.

Since the District Conference, I've been thinking about Rotary; what it does and why we choose to be a part of it.  I hope you enjoy the following.

Why do People Join Rotary ?

Have you ever stopped to wonder why you've joined Rotary?  What makes us want to join?  Here are some of the reasons Rotary is so appealing.

1.Friendship Fellowship/ Community - In an increasingly complex world, Rotary provides one of the most basic human needs; the need for friendship and fellowship.

2. Business Development - Everyone needs to network. Rotary consists of a cross-section of business communities, with members coming from all walks of life. We help each other and collectively help others.

3. Personal Growth and Development - membership ensures continuing growth and education in human relations and personal development.

4.Leadership Development - Rotary offers opportunities of leadership. Serving in these positions is an extension to our education, where skills such as learning how to motivate, influence and lead people are gained.

5. Citizenship in the Community - Members of a Rotary Club are generally better community citizens. Often we are the the most active citizens of any community.

6. Continuing Education - Guest Speakers at regular Meetings provide an opportunity to listen and learn about a variety of different topics.

7. Fun - Our Club is fun, we do exciting things together, that create lasting memories.

8. Prestige - Rotary members are prominent people, including executives, managers and professionals from all disciplines. Rotary is the oldest and most prestigious service club in the world.

9. Citizenship in the World - Every member of Rotary wears a "Rotary International " pin. There are very few places in the world that don't have Rotary Clubs. As a Rotarian, you are welcome - even encouraged - to attend any of the many clubs, worldwide. This encourages friendships in both local and global communities.

10. Public Speaking Skills - Often when members first join, they are unaccustomed to public speaking. Rotary develops confidence and skill in public communications and the opportunity to practice and perfect these skills.

I hope you find this list of reasons for joining Rotary, interesting.  Recruiting and maintaining members is always a constant requirement of a successful Rotary Club.  Perhaps you can use some of these tips when talking to friends who may be interested in joining Rotary.

Enjoy your weekend and for those who are helping at the Bunnings double header BBQ, thank you.
