Next Tuesday's Meeting

The Rotary Clubs of Sunshine Coast South - in partnership with IFYS Foster Care - are developing and building a therapeutic environment in the form of a garden and play area for young people living in their care.  See the Design Concept below.

Vicky Meyer of Integrated Family & Youth Services( IFYS) will be telling us more about the project at our meeting on 13 March at The Oaks Resort from 6.30am.

The Salvation Army

Welcome to the first week in March, and what a wet one it's been.

This week saw us out and about again.  Our Vocational Visit took us to the Salvation Army Headquarters in Caloundra.  Salvo Volunteers cooked up a hearty BBQ breakfast and we were entertained by Major Phil, the man in charge in Caloundra.  He gave a very informative talk about what role the Salvos play in helping those less fortunate than ourselves in the community.

Phil commented about the difficulty some of their clients have to go through to arrive at the Centre.  Serious lack of public transport in this area of Caloundra does jeopardise the care the Salvos are able to provide.  For those of you who missed the visit or would just like to know more about it, here is the link.  Also, if you'd like to know more about the Salvo's and the wonderful services they provide, don't hesitate to contact James, our Community Services Director.  James is a 'retired' Commissioner of the Salvos, is a wealth of knowledge and is always willing to help.

Alan Still's International Toast also had a Salvation Army flavour to it.  We recognised the 150th Birthday of the Salvo's in Indonesia, West Java in Rotary District 3410

Thanks to DIK Volunteers
My sincere appreciation to Ron & Bernie Strong, the other six Rotary members, and Judy who is here from Germany on holiday, who represented our cluster and worked at Donations in Kind (DIK) in Brisbane yesterday.

Because our numbers were light on we did a double shift. The work was very hard but very rewarding, making you realise how much we have and how very little our sister clubs in the islands have.

Many books were sorted and packed and we packed a 40’ container with 66 “very heavy” hospital beds (had to tie up all moving parts), 4 mattresses, 6 electric wheel chairs and 8 sets of cupboards. According to the powers that be, they usually only get 50 beds in a container, so quite a feat.

Once again thanks to those who participated.

Kind Regards
Wendy Gilson

Rotary’s amazing capacity to bring people together
When I was 16, like most teenagers, I was focused on my own life.  I hadn’t really thought about joining a service club or dedicating myself to helping others.  But that changed when a high school friend began talking to me about Rotary, and its local and global actions. I was captivated and wanted to learn more.

Update on proposal to merge Districts 9600, 9630 & 9640
The vote on redistricting (details below and attached) was as follows:

  • 50 clubs (75% of all clubs in the district) voted
  • 42 clubs (64% of the district) accepting the proposal.

The current thinking is that Queensland is to be redistricted to two (2) only districts. This is being achieved as follows.

District 9570 and 9550 will be merged and extend from just North of Gympie up to Far North Qld and across to the border with the Northern Territory, it may also include Part of the NT from Tennant Creek to Darwin.

District 9600, 9630 and 9640 are to be merged to form one district from Gympie to just  north of Glenn Innes in NSW  and West to the NT and SA border’s. This new District will also include our current clubs in PNG, the Solomon’s and Nauru. In total this new district would have approximately 165 clubs.

Attached is the current proposal document to merge district 9600 with 9630 and 9640.
