Rotary’s calendar includes monthly Themes:

  • centred on one of Rotary’s six areas of focus*, and
  • other months focussing on Membership, The Rotary Foundation, Vocational Service, Youth Service and Rotary Fellowships.
So, the Theme for the month of May is “Youth Service Month”.

The link between Rotary and youth for many clubs (including our own) is amazing.  Clubs engage with Youth Programs through Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA), Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment (RYPEN), Rotary Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA), Rotaract, Interact, District Scholarships, Rotary International Youth Exchanges, Peer Support Programs in schools, Cure Kids, Life Education vans, Literacy Programs in schools, and many others.

In just the month of April, we heard how:

  • President Anna is pursuing the opportunity to establish a new Interact club
  • Youth Service Director, Trevor Gilliland is recommending two candidates to be sponsored by our Rotary District 9600 to the National Youth Science Forum.  District wide there have been 33 applications to date; 24 candidates from the district are selected each year.

“The energy that Youth have is something for all of us to consider tapping into.  Some of our clubs have days where the students from the local school come in to take over a Rotary meeting and these are fun meetings to be a part of.  It‘s time to think outside the square and put some energy into preserving the future of Rotary.”

Rotary's Six Areas of Focus

*Rotary International is focussing its efforts in six areas to enhance our local and global impact.  Rotary’s most successful and sustainable projects and activities tend to fall within the following areas:

  • Promoting peace
  • Fighting disease
  • Providing clean water
  • Saving mothers and children
  • Supporting education
  • Growing local economies
