Hi Deborah:
It was a pleasure to meet you on Tuesday this week. I’ve cc-ed my colleague Zanthea on this email.
Zanthea, asked that I pass onto you the video of Ewen Maddock she referenced in her talk. You can find it here:
https://youtu.be/5Wdj19J6P6c Also, I believe Jim asked a question about the cost of desalination that I was not able to answer. Could you please pass on this response to his question?
In broad terms, the variable cost of producing water from the Gold Coast Desalination plant when in continuous operation is between $500–$800 per megalitre. Energy is the largest component (around 50% to 70%).
For comparison, the variable cost of producing water from Seqwater’s other water treatment plants is, on average, around $125 per megalitre. These variable costs are around 15% of the total operating costs of providing bulk water in SEQ. This cost does not include the cost of owning and operating the dams and pipelines that supply traditional water treatment plants.
You also mentioned you might be able to pass on contact for other rotarys in the area who would be interested in a preso. We would be happy to reach out to them and see if we can set up presentations if you pass on their details.
Finally, can you please tell Roger thank you for giving Z and I the tour of the Caloundra lighthouse. It was one of my highlights of the week!
I think Z will be in touch about additional information on Ewen Maddock in the near future.
Thanks again and have a good weekend,
jb
