Membership Director & President Elect Chris Rees was in the chair last Tuesday to lead our Open Forum.  He welcomed Gordon back after some sick leave together with Ana (new member), Kath (Inner Wheel), Ken (Morwell, Vic) and then proposed - in Alan Still's absence - a Toast to the Rotary Club of West Torrens in Adelaide.
President Bernie was then invited to induct Ana Carolina into membership after providing members with some of her background.
President Bernie covered a number of items including Mark Ward's safe arrival in Manilla, Thursday's Movie Night with Calpac boosting numbers to about 100 and helpers required from 5.30pm, a successful RYDA day, Wednesday's BBQ and advance notice of a BBQ to be manned at Kings Beach 26 May 2019 for the Sunshine Coast Concert Band.

The purpose of the Open Forum was to provide relevant details from the last Board Meeting and to generate ideas for both fundraising and projects to assist our local community.  Many thanks to those that contributed.  The following points were covered:

  • Japanese Peace garden - still in our plans although alternative approach may be required
  • The need for some form of local renovation project
  • Elderly assistance in the community, holiday - train journey
  • Supporting kids breakfast
  • Lantern Club
  • Beach volleyball
  • Car boot sale in line with Currimundi markets.
  • Children’s project - not sure of what form yet
  • Need to push stubby holders.
  • Rotary catering trailer
  • Dragon boat racing - dismissed as there is already a major tournament in existence
It was generally agreed there is a need for a Project and Fundraising committee to see if any of these (or other) ideas are feasible and can be taken forward.  This could be one committee that meets monthly.  Volunteers will be required to serve on this committee, numbers on the committee to be determined.

Gordon rose to announce that the flyers were ready for the Golf Day and these would be distributed to members (see later in this edition of The Reel), and that a raffle would be conducted ahead of the Golf Day with members' assistance.  Anticipated proceeds are $22,000 with 50% being split to the two major beneficiaries.
