Genta opened the gathering and welcomed the other 13 members to Dicky Beach Surf-Lifesaving Club (DBSC).
Only guest today was Kath's partner Ian and Mia was also in the background cooking our breakfast (thanks Mia).
Alan toasted Rotary Club of Birmingham West Midlands which was chartered in 1914 and has 53 members.

President Chris was an apology due to RYDA setup and Bernie reported on:

  • Thanks to all the volunteers last week for RYDA and Bunnings BBQ.
  • RYDA again this week on Wed & Thu with setup today.
  • Pam wishes to setup down from RYDA catering and Kath & Deb were quick to volunteer as her replacement, thanks ladies
Genta then introduced Rob Flood from the DBSC who spoke on the history, current activities which was followed by a tour of the facilities.

Guest speaker Rob Flood from Dicky Beach Surf-Lifesaving Club (DBSC):
DBSC started in 1950 with 10 members and the club house was located near Moffat Beach with commanding ocean views. This club house burnt down in 1975 and this position was lost and the club moved to the current position at Dicky Beach in 1976. Whilst not affording the views at Moffat, it does have the advantage of allowing for growth and now has 300 members.
The Surf Live-saving movement started 1903 either at Manly or Bondi and there are now 163 clubs in Australia. This was the first in the world.
There is a wide variety of activities from nippers to competitions which cover 100 events including more than water eg sprints and beach flags. The club also has surf rowing boats and IRB (rubber ducks).
To join you still need to complete your bronze medallion, just like Alan Still achieved in 1945 and the motto of surf lifesaving is Vigiliance & Service.
