In a break from our usual venue, we met at Urban Espresso & Wine, 4/5 Innovation Pkwy, Birtinya

On the 29th we will be at One Third French at Henzell's Plaza, Caloundra

Under the watchful eye of Chairman Trevor we basked beside Lake Kawana
Welcome to guest Heather
Our speaker was our very own Frenchman Jim Lombard
Mark was "under instructions" regarding Irish's camera

After first hovering over the initial Google search result in NZ, James proposed the International Toast to RC Belfast, in Ireland
Founded 1913, "we have fun" and "51 page Annual Report" were an interesting juxtaposition.

Presidents report:
  • To initiate a Friends of Rotary we will need to change our Constitution
  • Merv is travelling well and has two appointments this week
For something different, we recounted our fathers' occupations
A thought from Mahatma Gandhi "It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver"

After not being introduced by Darryl, Jim recounted the story of his remarkable life
Jim, whose real name sounds like "jille" was born French near Lyon, but moved to his Fathers home of Switzerland
Around 1960, after Uni, he was working as an electronics engineer for the Mirage fighter which was bought by Australia
In 1964 he moved to Australia on a two year visa - 55 years later it's still home
Population was 7m - (none skilled) Jim started in a migrant camp near Albury which was previously an US Army Base, they taught him English, and later in the Riverina met Al Grassby who was looking for someone who could speak Italian ..
Married an Aussie in Leyton and owned an electrical business, TVs at 500 pounds, antennas
Next he was lured by the promise of a suntan to to be part of a barometric survey of the waters around Australia (as you do) on old lighthouse tenders for the next 6 years
Then overseas to US .. something about used aircraft.. met Yvonne... swapped wives! back to Aus ... French Cafe in Sydney then moved to Sarina, built a house, had a son in 86, own company ..
Just for something different, saw the need for, and invented a domestic waste water plant and moved to the Sunshine Coast, retired, then started the Men's shed (and gave Roger RSI!)
Wow

Darryl's got us doing a LOUD SHIRT DAY on the 6th October - Guest is Mr Bull from Hear & Sound, he was the founder of Toombul Music, and saved Deborah from a life of crime
Roger mentioned that the lighthouses site was to be gifted to Council by DoT, a bit of a milestone in the conservation and activation of the place.
He has also added some pics to our History page.  A good trick was an image search thru his Rotary folder and dumping them in this album - anyone else have stuff to add?

Interestingly, I interviewed the Jan Crawford who coined the title Gem of the Sunshine Coast the other day

Sgt Ian ended the meeting

Are you smarter than a preschooler?

Which way is the bus below travelling?
To the left or to the right?

Can't make up your mind?
Look carefully at the picture again. ?
Still don't know?

Pre-schoolers all over Australia
were shown this picture asked the same question.
90% of the pre-schoolers gave this answer.
"The bus is travelling to the right."

When asked, "Why do you think the bus is travelling to the right ?"
They answered:
"Because you can't see the door to get on the bus."
