On December 22nd, 1849 at the age of 28 James. married his first wife, Harriet Catherine Harris, the eldest child of John and Harriet Harris of Woodend Ipswich.
John Harris was involved in the building trade after settling in Ipswich in 1844 - it is likely that through this connection that James and Harriet met
Harriet was 19 years of age when she and James were married at the Church of St Johns Ipswich. The couple went on to have 17 children - only 13 of which survived.

James acquired his first portion of land in 1859 - two lots one of 322 acres, the other 327 acres purchased with Mr Faircloft from the New South Wales Government at one pound ($2) an acre - James was later to buy his partner out. Between the years of 1868 and 1885 he acquired a further 10,000 acres on a lease/purchase arrangement. It was on a holding of 420 acres at Redbank Plains he subsequently built his homestead - "Eden Station” at Opossum Creek
James met Alan Cunningham when he was coming from Sydney also Governor Bowen and Governor Gipps
