We are of many diverse opinions, ages and faiths - Jews, Muslims, Christians and Bahá'ís.
We live in “interesting times” and often get a front row seat,
sitting, as we do, in one of the spiritually and politically most significant  regions of the world"

Joke Q - How many tickles to make an octopus laugh? A - Ten tickles

Deborah introduced Luke O’Sullivan - Head of Campus, Kairos Community College, and College business manager

Luke spent the first 14 years of his teaching career in Education Queensland schools between the Sunshine Coast and Weipa, on Cape York.  His roles have been split between Sports Coordinator, Year Level Coordinator, Community Leader and Pedagogy Coach prior to arriving as Head of Campus at Kairos’ new Caloundra campus which opened in Term 1 2020.  He has always enjoyed working with students who are faced with significant challenges and coaching colleagues how to best support the learning of these students.

He is a highly active father of three and actively engages in triathlons and various other medium distance events.  He is very energetic in his field, helping to motivate teachers to continue to improve.

Kairos has been established since 2015 at Deception Bay, but has now opened in Caloundra
It is for students who can't handle the normal school environment.  Luke has worked at Meridan State College, which has 2,000 plus students.
In comparison Kairos has 42 with 12 staff

They give their students a feeling of being safe, and support families.
They assist students through traineeships, and have a connection to the Head Start program. They have meals together in a happy family situation.

Deborah thanked Luke and Katy

Assistant District Governor (ADG) Tony gave a short address
  • Get in early for Grants - there is funding available
  • The Rotary Youth Training seminar RYT is from the 5th to 11th of December - $800 per student at Crows Nest. District could supply a speaker on this subject.
  • Tell district about your membership.
  • The Youth Protection Officer handles blue cards  - they are not compulsory but there are insurance implications.
Judy thanked the workers at the barbecue - it grossed $1050.  Bunnings donated an esky which will be used as a raffle prize.

James gave the welfare report -
  • Ann is back after her fall
  • Gordon is having surgery today - they are going to close an eye
  • Darryl's partner Shirley has cataract surgery today
Debra - RYDA is coming up so guest speakers will not have full attendance. Next week Roger is talking about the Glasshouse Mountains.

Jim thanked the attendees at the Men’s Shed opening - look how far we've come in eight years. Genta and Dave are new members there. On the 3rd Oct  they have a barbecue at Bunnings - helpers welcome.

Sergeant Ian had to hold his tongue with the ADG present. apparently Sergeant aren't allowed to embarrass DG’s Past DGs or ADGs - and watch out for anyone who might have a TLA (three letter acronym)

A huge thankyou to all the members that volunteered yesterday for the Bunnings BBQ
