Presidents Report delivered by James
  • Top of the agenda is the District Conference Planning. It’s “all systems go“. There are 350 registrations, with 12 from the Rotary Club of Caloundra. The cut off was yesterday. Volunteers will be needed next week to move tables, with help Sunday afternoon especially requested.
  • There are 350 show bags to pack on Wednesday morning
  • Flood relief was discussed with a DG Tony at the RYDA meeting.
  • PETS has been rescheduled due to the rain bomb
  • RAWCS Rotary Australia World Community Service has launched a flood appeal
  • There is a disaster response fund which can provide grants
  • One and a half million people have fled Ukraine, and the number is expected to increase to five million
  • Rotary Foundation Australia provides funds for large projects “BI - “Public Benevolent Fund.
  • RC Caloundra needs “a good project“
  • RYDA - Jim and James attended the meeting, RC Cal Pac are also involved, and RC Maleny has joined the clubs helping out. Nevill is standing down as co-ordinator, and although “no one can do what Neville does” we need to get behind a new coordinator. Day manages are also needed. We could start by writing out the various job descriptions.
Jokes
During Sunday’s church service did James noticed a $.50 piece with bite marks on it – apparently it was a bit coin

And someone slipped over on an omega three capsule – luckily his injuries were only super fish oil

James’ thought for the day from Lyndon B Johnson
Peace is a journey of 1000 miles - taken one step at a time

Dave introduced Sherry
Apparently she has “done everything“ according to the write-up

Sherry gave a quick recap – She has a pharmacy background and at 18 years old was running three pharmacies.
She produced a Rotary trophy from a 50 year Time Capsule.

She has now worked with Alex Morgan for 10 years. He is an ex-GP, however the practice is now run under the auspices of the National Skin Cancer Centre. They have 22 clinics around Australia. A decade ago there were no specific skin cancer centres, with people having to go through the public hospital system, which often took too long.

The management of skin cancers has a high priority in Australia, but New Zealand has an even higher rate due to the breakdown in the ozone layer. 99% of skin cancers are caused by the sun, however with melanomas it’s only 95% – they can even start in-utero.  Mostly their repercussions are preventable.

In simple terms, cancers are uncontrolled growth of normal cells.

BCCs – Basel cell carcinoma is caused by continuous exposure to the sun.
SCCs or squamous cell carcinomas are caused by sporadic exposure – “you’ll know if you have one“. They often begin with an insect bite or a wound
Melanomas are caused by continuous exposure.

Typical signs looked for are:
  • Asymmetry
  • Border not round
  • Colour
  • Diameter
  • and Evolving changes
Interestingly, hairdressers often refer patients when they find unusual markings in the scalp

Two out of three Australians will have had a skin cancer by the time they are 70
Melanomas are the third most common
James thanks Shelley for the most informative talk

I have added from one page from the booklet Shelley has included in the show bags available after the meeting – thanks Shelley

Directors
Jim announce that we will not be doing the MS barbecue - he has passed on that duty to the Lions Club
Sergeant Ian concluded the meeting with his usual round of semi-truths and complete fabrications.
