Chair for the day Bob was forced to introduced himself. In the spirit of Sgt Richard, he had to award himself a "No bell" prize

26 November is memorable:
  • In 1863 Abraham Lincoln declared last Thursday in November as Thanksgiving Day
  • In 2003 it was the last flight of the Concorde, which, if you don't remember, first flew in 1969
Welcome to Suzanne and Hope

Thanks for the photos Dave

There was no President's Report today

Pam reported that James had been to see Merv – he is "not going well. ”Anne said that he had been given a brain MRI. Please do not phone or visit – SMS is okay. They are in the new unit, and James thought that Merv had been holding on for that

Cognitive intelligence

Misbehaviour – Last thought when the dog is doing something strange

Full training cost between 60 and $100,000, and it's best done with the handler

It needs to be an alignment of medical needs/life/environment/dog

Dogs from the middle of the litter are best as assistance animals – the earlier pups get more nutrition and they tend to be more bossy. The middle pups are the most founded, and the late pups can be too timid.
They need to be exposed to multiple environments

Training is started at six months old
The whole team is to be assessed, not just the dog
Never wash just the dog – wash the team

She gave the example of a Toowoomba boy with muscular dystrophy and autism -and excitable dog would not be a good idea

There's no age limit or medical requirement for handlers. They can be as young as three and non-verbal with selected conversations. The oldest is 86.

Camping and training weekend in October - 26 dogs on Saturday “all behaving, 24 dogs on Sunday “family”

Darryl had a question – do they train children too?
1 - Train kids  2. Adults trained by kids

Dave -  Labrador on shoulder? - her labrador resuscitated her 17 times in one night. He could do mouth-to-mouth and resuscitation, and would bite her on the nose when necessary medically. When her heart was down to 18 bpm, the dog picked it up

Elaine asked about hospital admissions – you can take a dog “but"

Sally said that the hospitals had checklists – open wound equals “maybe not” and the operating theatres are definitely “no”

Needs of Dogs first

Robyn asked about taking assistance dogs into shops – they are not required by law to wear a jacket but she does carry a digital card to prove and to show a message

Chris asked about toileting - 1m square pads, can be disposable
Male dogs needed to be desexed before they stopped squatting

Bob thanked Suzanne and noted noted what "extraordinary work" she did
