Hi Elaine,
I heard you say at the last club meeting that you are running out of speakers.
It occurred to me that one thing Rotarians never get to hear about (at least, in the three clubs of which I have been a member) is something of direct benefit to them.
I appreciate that the usual purpose of speakers is to inspire our support for various community projects. However, unless Rotarians keep (or do something to become) fit and active, there will be no one to provide that support!
Our club's demographic appears to be the classic Rotary demographic. That is, the average age of our club's members must be >60, if not >65.
Needless to say, at this stage of life natural deterioration and ignorant lifestyle choices all conspire to shorten or end our lives, or limit our enjoyment.
I therefore propose that we call on various health professionals to come and talk to us.
Rather than give them carte blanche to tell us whatever they like, I also propose that speakers be invited to provide 3-to-5 recommendations for our demographic to maintain or improve themselves.
This can be called - wait for it! - the '3-to-5 Program'. (What this label lacks in inspirational marketing appeal it makes up for by the fact that it cannot be shortened to another bloody Rotary acronym!!!)
I have already spoken to an Exercise Physiologist and he is willing to come and talk to us.
Perhaps there can be approaches made to psychologists, GPs, gerontologists, social workers, dieticians...
I also think there is an opportunity to market the 3-to-5 Program to the 12 members of our club I have never met (except a few at the Changeover lunch) who never, or rarely, attend meetings. Self-interest is always a good motivator.
Cheers,
Dero
