With two weeks until the registrations for our District conference close, I am writing to encourage all members of district 9600 to consider travelling to Kingaroy from 26 – 28 March 2021. The District conference gives you the opportunity to make new friends and enjoy the fellowship of old acquaintances. It gives you the chance to travel to the edge of the outback and enjoy country hospitality, food and entertainment. The weekend allows you to be inspired by many outstanding speakers who have been specifically chosen to appeal to young, young at heart or in between. Accommodation is readily available, both in town and also in the surrounding countryside, many at reduced prices. With over 30 sites in our House of friendship, visitors can see many Rotary club and District projects, as well as familiarising yourself with local businesses. You can start your weekend with a round of golf with fellow Rotarians or visit one of the many tourist attractions in or outside Kingaroy. This conference has been well supported by the South Burnett community, as it occurs after seven years of drought and other natural disasters. As a result, the South Burnett has experienced a downturn in the local economy and unfortunately an increase in the youth suicide rate. By attending the conference, Rotarians and guests will be contributing to the local economy and supporting the local community. Every opportunity to work with the P&C committees of local schools, showcasing local businesses and supporting fellow service clubs has been a priority. Ultimately, your conference aims to raise funds to combat the rise in youth suicide in the South Burnett. Participants will hear firsthand how this will occur and the expected benefits of this long-term project. Subsequently, Rotary has been humbled by the donations we have received for the District conference raffle, as members of the local community and our sponsors want to reduce the number of local young people committing suicide.
